A drifting ocean buoy is an automated observation platform that freely floats on the sea surface and moves with ocean currents. Its core function is to automatically and continuously measure and transmit key ocean environmental data, primarily including sea surface temperature, sea surface pressure, and surface ocean current speed and direction as reflected by its own drift trajectory. Some buoys can also measure wave height, salinity, or meteorological parameters. Buoys rely on underwater sails or similar devices to move with specific depth currents. Data collected by internal sensors is processed and transmitted in real-time or near real-time to land-based data centers via satellite communication systems such as ARGOS or Iridium. Satellites also provide their precise location.
